Empowering Prevention: The Fight Against Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a grave violation of human dignity, exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit through force, fraud, or coercion. At The Value of One, a Christian nonprofit dedicated to reducing human trafficking in all its forms, we believe every life holds immeasurable worth in the eyes of God. Founded in 2020, our mission—rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ—focuses on prevention, rescue, and rehabilitation to break the chains of exploitation worldwide. Today, let’s dive into the critical role of prevention, armed with awareness, strategies, and faith-driven action.

Understanding the Scope of Human Trafficking

Globally, an estimated 27.6 million people are trapped in forced labor across industries, from agriculture to domestic work.  In the United States alone, the impact is profound: nearly 83% of people have experienced some form of trauma in their lifetime, which can heighten vulnerability to traffickers.  Alarmingly, online exploitation is surging, with over 36 million reports of child sexual exploitation and abuse made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in 2023.  These numbers aren’t just statistics—they represent sons, daughters, neighbors, and souls precious to our Creator.

Traffickers often prey on those facing economic hardship, homelessness, or isolation, forcing them into labor or sex work in exchange for basic necessities like food or shelter. Signs to watch for include individuals who seem controlled, fearful, or unable to speak freely, or those recruited online through social media, games, or chatrooms.

Prevention Strategies: Building a Safer World

Prevention starts with education and community empowerment. Here are actionable strategies grounded in awareness and proactive steps:

•  Strengthen Workplace and Business Practices: Encourage companies to adopt ethical guidelines, like the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, to combat forced labor in supply chains. Training for employees and procurement teams can identify and mitigate risks.

•  Enhance Access to Essential Services: Support vulnerable populations by volunteering at shelters, food banks, or during emergencies. Creating safety plans and hosting trainings on trauma-informed care can prevent exploitation during transitional periods like disasters or homelessness.

•  Foster Family and Social Connections: Talk to children about healthy online habits and mentor youth to build resilience against online predators. Initiatives like becoming a foster parent or taking challenges to strengthen relationships can reduce isolation—a key trafficking risk factor.

•  Promote Economic Mobility: Offer financial literacy programs, skill-building workshops, and legal aid for housing or record expungement. Empowering individuals economically closes doors to traffickers who exploit desperation.

At The Value of One, we put these strategies into action through faith-based education. We offer training sessions in churches and schools, teaching the church’s role in combating trafficking. Drawing on over 20 years of law enforcement experience, we conduct investigations to expose exploiters and equip communities with the tools to prevent victimization before it begins.

The Power of Faith and Community Action

As believers, we are called to “defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:9). Prevention isn’t just policy—it’s a spiritual mandate to value each one as Christ does. By sharing the Gospel, we provide not only physical freedom but eternal hope.

Even though Human Trafficking Prevention Month is in January, every day is an opportunity to act. Join us in raising awareness: participate in events like #WearBlueDay, complete free online trainings, or use hashtags like #EndTrafficking on social media to spread the word.
